Dental fillings are recommended once the decay sets in the upper part of the tooth. The infected/decayed part of the tooth is removed and then the healthy tooth is restored with different types of materials depending on the size, shape and extent of decay.
Root Canal Treatment
When the decay/infection reaches till the inner part of the tooth, the nerves get affected and thus restoring the tooth with just a filling is not possible. Leaving the infection or the infected tooth in the oral cavity is not recommended, since an infection in the milk may damage the permanent tooth bud too. Thus, we are left with two options, either remove the full infection from the tooth and restore it, which is called as root canal treatment OR remove the tooth. Now, if that particular tooth has still time left before its actual shedding time, then its not advisable to be removed, A natural restored tooth will act as the best space maintainer till the eruption of its permanent successor.
A root canal treatment is nothing but a treatment wherein the filling is done till the root end. After removing the infected nerves/pulp from within the tooth, the root canals are cleaned and then filled up with specially formulated material. This material has the property of being absorbed along with the reabsorbing roots of the deciduous tooth.
